Holiday Sales Drop to Force Bankruptcies, Closings

Do not be dismayed by the news of this kind and others that are surely to follow. Why? Because when you're talking Retail, you're talking about wants.

Whether you can articulate it or not, your biggest concerns are needs, not wants; it's very easy to elevate wants to the status of needs when in fact they are wants. You can live without them - maybe you just don't think you know how.

The fact of the matter is this: these big, consumer-oriented companies have been unsustainable for quite some time. They don't know how to make money any more. They're too big for their britches. In Econ 101 you learn about the Law of Diminishing Returns, and in Econ 404 you learn why it's a law that so far nobody has found a way around.

Adding to this natural woe is the past 8+ years of market deregulation and the fact that the Bush Admin has been really bad for business. What we're seeing now is simple the "free" markets fruit bearing and I don't know of anyone who likes how it's tasting.

Headline Should Read: New Opportunities Abound!

And while it's a pretty negative atmosphere that we find ourselves in, I think it's high time to wake up and start sniffing out opportunities. Granted, credit really drives our economy in that it's hard to make money without have seed money (credit, capital) but we're just going to have to make do regardless.

The opportunity is here and now for small businesses to refocus on meeting the needs of their community. Needs are - in order - food, shelter, clothing and credit. Small banks and Credit Unions: here's your chance to put thoe giant investment banks out of business, and help your communities grow

For me it's a chance to help my community grow its own food. Growing your own will replace up to 50-60% of your food bill, depending on how big you go. The bigger the better in this case if you're starting out with zero. And there's plenty of opportunity if you have a lot of neighbors who want to pit in and grow their own food CSA style. The more growers, the merrier and more abundant the offerings will be.

While you're here, I have to ask: are you composting? If not, start now. Don't let anything hold you back. Please see details here.

Compost

Erosion is the end results of a gradual loss of soil fertility. Composts helps build good structure that encourages optimum fertility and resist erosion. Really fertile soil is very resistant to erosion - that is soil as nature intended it to be.
