Meat - who knew it was the cause of global warming. So says lots of groups. But it's just not true. Even reputable publications and organizations (the UN for example) have bought this belief system wholesale without thinking it through.
As Coleman points out, meat isn't the issue, but industrial agriculture is. This is in line with the Land Institute's insistence that nearly 40% of the carbon injected into the atmosphere is the result of industrial agriculture.
This issue is just another example of why we need to de-link fossil fuel from our food supply. It's not a matter of if, but when the food system collapses. My take: decades of chemical use has made millions of acres of farms susceptible to diseases. On top of that are unsanitary food processors. Unhealthy soil + unclean processing = contaminated food. Since both insist they're not the problem, we'll see more and more food-borne illnesses. That in turn will increase the price of food. When the next fuel price surge hits, we'll have a perfect storm.
My prediction: GMO corn disease outbreak.
But it doesn't have to be this way. Here's what you can do: eat locally grown, organic food only. This isn't elitism at all - I'll explain why soon. And don't eat anything that is advertised on TV or has more than 5 ingredients. Doesn't matter what the ingredients are, just count.
