Food Fight » Legislation » Senator Mark Udall, D-Colorado

Sen. Udall's letter is a much better than Sen. Bennet's. Not so lectury and doesn't open himself up to ridicule. Overall this is a response that doesn't write me off, turn me off and actually encourages me to participate. Which makes Sen. Bennet's letter all the more unpalatable.

Thank you for contacting my office regarding genetically engineered food crops. I appreciate your taking the time to share your concerns with me.

As you may know, genetically modified foods have been available for consumption since the early 1990s. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) works closely with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to research and regulate such foods. I believe that we need to be sure that the FDA, EPA and USDA are well equipped to ensure that our nation's food supply is safe and healthy and to encourage growing practices that do not harm the environment.

Please be assured that I will monitor this matter closely and should any related legislation regarding genetically engineered foods come before the U.S. Senate, I will keep your views in mind.

I will continue to listen closely to what you and other Coloradans have to say about matters before Congress, the concerns of our communities, and the issues facing Colorado and the nation. My job is not about merely supporting or opposing legislation; it is also about bridging the divide that has paralyzed our nation's politics. For more information about my positions and to learn how my office can assist you, please visit my website at www.markudall.senate.gov.

Compost

Soil improved with compost holds more moisture. Water is soaked up like a sponge and stored on the granules (structure). Structure is built by soil fungi and bacteria.
