V is For Veggie
We're entering year 4 of the huge upswing in the number of people who are planting their own veggie gardens, but most people seem stuck in the 1940's, preferring to call them Victory Gardens.
Victory over what exactly? Bad bugs? Poor soil? Umm.... Germany? Japan?
I'm not sure why but even the local Extension offices choose to associate this phenomena with war. Is that the intent? Do people refer to their food as coming from their victory garden? Or do they appropriately call it their veggie garden?
I don't even know what I call my garden other than garden. Doesn't matter what I grow, I'm pretty sure it's just "garden".
I think Extension and others can do better than to bring up the issue of war, especially since this war is and always has been about oil. Oil needs to be decoupled from America's food system.
See Post Carbon Institute for an excellent guide about how to do that very thing.
