Winter Solstice Anxiety
My love recently picked up two Amy Goldman books: The Compleat Squash and The Heirloom Tomato
Both books are loaded with great information about squash and tomatoes. There's nothing lacking. The photography is great, the information complete, and the prose makes me very anxious for Spring to hurry up and get here already so I can start growing and fretting over each plant.
Since it was late December '08 when I came across these two books - thank you love! - the timing couldn't be better as I can plan out our garden. I already bought Sibley's Banana Squash, and now researching which tomatoes to grow for my love. It will be a variation of what worked so well for us this past summer: a beefsteak, a paste, and cherries that ripen over a period of time.
Also, I love the recipes each book offers. There is nothing better on this planet to experience than to grow your own food and then eat it fresh from the vine. Just the fact that the author grows these herself makes it easy to imagine myself assembling recipe ingredients on the table out back and prepare it there as well!
Nightshades give me muscle tension headaches but that doesn't stop me from growing tomatoes and enjoying them, too. I love the taste of a great tomato, straight from the vine. They're one of the fruits that makes sense to grow yourself. I can't wait for Spring to start growing tomatoes! Thank you Amy, for two great books!
